Beverly Hills

Oh, sorry, Belmont Hill. It's been probably 30 years since I've visited Beverly Hills, but I imagine Belmont Hill--in a micro sense--to be our Boston version.

It has been awhile since I've spent much time roaming the streets of Belmont, admiring the homes and the views of the Boston skyline. I happened to drive through on a whim yesterday and to my delight good things are happening in this little town. I was inspired to spend some time there on foot this morning and was even more pleased with the changes I'm seeing.

There are many gorgeous old homes, mostly well maintained, on rolling green lots. But what I'm starting to see is an influx of more unique homes. I think we are starting to see a separation from the idea of the contractor designed and built 4 bed 4.5 bath center entrance, huge foyer and even larger window over the door, "welcome to my my garage" (for 2 cars and an SUV) home.  And maybe it's because there is money in Belmont. Not Beverly Hills money, but still money that hires architects. And money that cares about design (hopefully) for life and style rather than just for squarefootage...

it's hard to see, but on the right side, the framing leans out toward the city, that is going to be a stunning space.

Driving yesterday, through the still leafless trees I saw the beginnings of a new home. And not box new. The timbers glistened and angled in the mid-day sun. It was a sighting that inspired my return. Unfortunately, the morning sun did not afford the same beautiful sight, but there is promise for ample glass. Good glass. Big glass.  I love glass.  I fear however, as the leaves appear, it will be harder to watch, but I'm looking forward to the progress on this one.

Further up the road, another one, much further along in its build. Tucked neatly on the hill. Sitting proudly amongst its century old neighbors. It works.

Still further... a somewhat less inspiring attempt. It screams of center entrance colonial McMansion, but with a slightly more exotic facade. In interesting complement or contrast to the mid-century neighbor.  But still C+ for effort?  I did give a bonus point (or two) for the glass roof on the top of the silo.

And finally, although this home has been here for years, I'd guess close to 15, I believe it to be one of the more interesting and beautifully sited homes that I've had the privilege to walk past.  I come back occasionally just to peek at it, and make sure it's OK (I'm sure the owners love that, but what do they expect when they build a beauty).

the photo does no justice...

These are others too. Too many for today. But I am happy, excited and inspired by the change.
